Suzy's Helping Hands - October Newsletter |
There is nothing like a good swift cold kick from Mother Nature to make us pull out the scarves and jackets! Yikes, its cold out there, which means...
Its time to pull the rest of your fall and winter clothes and say goodbye summer. I have already taken 50% of my summer clothes down and the winter tubs are ready to come up.
This month's tips will guide you on how to change over this season's wardrobe and make your closets easy to shop from.
Yes, I said shop. As some of you know, before Suzy's Helping Hands, I was Shop With Suzy and I always told the women to think of their closets as their own personal stores.
If your closets are overstuffed, you will be frustrated before you even have on your first piece of clothing. If you cannot find space for one more hanger, there are clothes on the floor, you can not open your drawers, you have too much!
If you have tags on your clothes from last season that you did not wear, you may be overbuying or not purchasing the right items, so it may be time to go through, organize and figure out what you need for next season. Here is how you do it!
First, empty your closet of the remaining summer and spring items, leaving just a couple in case Mother Nature decides to bestow upon us one of her Indian Summers.
*Trade summer and spring clothes bins and storage spaces with those used for your winter clothes.
Second, clean your closet thoroughly. Cleaning closets are no fun, but you will be more eager to welcome in the fall and organize your closet if it is clean.
Third, have 2 containers or garbage bags. 1) Place all items to donate in one container; 2) Items to sell in the second; 3) And place your remaining wardrobe on your bed into classifications.
i.e. Jackets, shirts, skirts, pants and dresses. (If you buy clothing mostly in outfits, then group them together and then classify the rest.)
*Think of your wardrobe like a utility drawer, spoons, knives and forks.
Fourth and last, hang each classification color coated from light to dark.
From this you should be able to see what is needed to spice up your wardrobe. Reflect back on how much use you got out of each classification and or item to avoid buying unnecessary purchases.
If financial times are tough, fill in your wardrobe with a few new tops or sweaters and some new jewelry. This can brighten up an outfit and give some old pieces a feeling of new, while keeping cost down.
OTHER TIPS If you have a mismatch of hangers, take an inventory of your wardrobe and purchase new ones. Make sure you have the proper types for sweaters, camisoles,
dresses and trousers. I prefer the white plastic hangers from Target or Walmart that are also reasonably priced.
Rule of thumb: if you are holding on to size 8's and you are a 14 or above get rid of them...
I am not saying you are not going to
lose weight but if you do, it is important to reward yourself with new
clothes of current fashions.
Also, some say if you are holding onto something that you have not worn
for one year, get rid of it ... I will give you two, so long as you do
it each year!
I hope these will help you to be able to shop your closets with ease!
Love, Suzy
